The Presenter:  Janet Burak, LCSW
Janet Burak is in private practice doing individual and marital therapy. She is a graduate of the Metropolitan Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and did doctoral work at NYU. She is the NY Membership Chair of the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work and a long-standing member of the NYSSCSW-Metropolitan Chapter. She conducts workshops for single, mid-life women.

The Topic: "I Love Him, I Love Him Not - Intimacy Issues of Single Mid-Life Women"
New choices and opportunities abound in today's world for mid-life women. Yet often women experience difficulty meeting available men, feel ambivalent about their current relationships or are unsure about being in a relationship at all. Women struggle with fantasies and inhibitions related to life in former times, while living in a culture that continues to idealize youth, beauty, style, and money. These themes will be elaborated on, with reference to self-psychology, contemporary oedipal theory and object relations in the treatment of two or three women in their forties and fifties. The question becomes what do these women want now?

Topic: The Role of Forgiveness in the Working Through of Traumatic Events – A Dialogue

Presenter: Gwenn A. Nusbaum, LCSW, BCD

Through intensive therapeutic work, opportunities to transcend traumatic events and achieve post-traumatic mastery are possible for people.  This workshop will discuss components of post-traumatic growth as conceptualized by Richard Tedeschi, and link the question: Is forgiveness necessary to the process of working through and healing from traumatic events – especially those involving victimizations – and if so, why?  A brief statement about “forgiveness therapies”, and the controversy surrounding it, will be offered.  Clinical vignettes will illustrate instances in which traumatized patients have grappled with the question of forgiveness and what it has meant to both forgive and not to forgive. Significant time will be given to participants, for a dialogue about these inquiries.

Gwenn A. Nusbaum, LCSW, BCD, CGP, has treated survivors in individual, couple and group therapy for over 25 years.  She has published on the subject of the efficacy of psychodynamic group treatment for women with histories of childhood sexual traumas, the relationship between sexual abuse and eating disorders and the need for defiance in women with abuse histories.  A relational psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, Gwenn maintains a private practice in the East Village and is senior faculty of the Postgraduate Group Therapy Department as well as Training Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center.

Professionalism and Ethics in Clinical Social Work Conference for the Metropolitan Chapter

Presenters: Hillel Bodek, MSW, LCSW-R, BCD, Chair of the State Society Ethics Committee for over 25 years and Eileen Ain, PhD, LCSW, Chair of the Met Chapter Clinical Ethics Committee.

Hillel Bodek will speak on the issue of professionalism for about 30-40 minutes, and then discuss clinical documentation for about 45 minutes, after which Eileen Ain will discuss theoretical matrices for resolving ethical dilemmas, the types of dilemmas resolved by social workers before and after September 11 and the use of The Ethics Survey.

Lunch will be from 1:00 - 2:00 at local restaurants. Then, Hillel will discuss common ethical problems that have come up in his consulting work with social workers in and out of the Society, over the past 25+ years as the NYSSCSW State Chair of the Committee on Ethics and Professional Standards (informed consent, competence abandoning/terminating patients, dual relationships-conflicts of interest, supervision and fee splitting/remuneration for referrals).

The day will close with a Panel Discussion by Eileen and Hillel responding to questions about Ethics and Professionalism.

*To help make sure that the panel will be helpful to the participants in the day's program, we invite people who are registering for this conference, to submit questions on ethical issues which they have encountered. These should take the following format:

1) Ethical issue as perceived by the clinical social worker.
2) Facts of the case --- non-identifiable to a specific person(s).
3) Was the dilemma resolved?
4) How was the ethical dilemma resolved? or Not?

When working with couples or individuals, as well as reviewing one’s own life experience, we as therapists are constantly aware of the complexity of relationship dynamics.  We consistently deal with the reality that relationships are complicated, challenging, and frequently manifest conflict, confrontation and negative communication.  This in turn challenges the therapist as well as the clients, often with the concomitant feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and failed attempts to address the overt and covert dynamics to transition into a potentially more fulfilling and connected relationship.

Imago Relationship Therapy, which has synthesized most theories of human development and behavior, provides a theoretical and dynamic base to understand how “romantic love” invariably moves into the “power struggle” and conflict.  It also provides the therapeutic intervention that has been found to be a very effective process: the intentional couple’s dialogue.

This presentation will discuss and explore the above as well as demonstrate the couple’s dialogue and the components that move a relationship from conflict to connection.

Ellen C. Weber, LCSW, DCSW, ACSW, has been practicing for over 30 years.  She has attended the Advanced Institute for Analytic Psychotherapy and has been a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist for the past 15 years.  She is also certified in EMDR.  She is in private practice in midtown Manhattan.

 The Membership Committee of the Met Chapter has been actively recruiting new members to our organization, as well as making efforts to insure that the educational and social needs of current members are met, as fully as possible. 

Both before and particularly since the well-attended private practice workshop given by me last May 1st, many of you indicated a desire for assistance with your private practices or to have help with your efforts to begin one. Requests for assistance usually center on issues concerning money and marketing, as well as many other relevant matters.

 To meet this evident need, beginning Thursday, January 20th from 7-9 p.m., I will conduct a private practice workshop in my office, for any Met Chapter members interested in discussing their private practice-related problems or concerns, reviewing existing promotional materials or developing new ones, and evaluating their current marketing efforts and/or learning new ones. Sample promotional materials adaptable to your own practice will be available, as well as other helpful handouts.

 In February, the workshop will be held on Thursday, Feb 3rd and 17th and in March on Thursday, March 3rd and 17th, as well. After the last session, this offering will be evaluated to determine its value to our members, before making it an ongoing program.

 If you are interested, please e-mail me at RBJoelson@aol.com and reserve a seat for one of the above five evenings. There is no minimum number of participants and the maximum number is seven. Your ‘reservation’ will be acknowledged as soon as it is received.

 As with everything else the Met Chapter provides, this program is included in your annual dues so there is no fee involved.

 This workshop is designed to meet the private practice-related needs of our members at three different stages of practice development: (1) those who have been in private practice for many years and wish to strengthen and expand their practices; (2) those in the early stages of practice development; (3) those contemplating a private practice in the future. This four-hour workshop is a streamlined version of the practice development course I taught at Hunter College School of Social Work for 12 years. It was an 8-week, 16 hour course that cost $325. The workshop on Saturday, May 1st from 9-1 is free...one of the many benefits of your membership in the Society and the Met Chapter. There is still room. Hope to see you there!

 Participants will be helped to:
  Handle the many administrative and clinical challenges that arise in private practice
  Learn basic marketing skills and how to implement them
  Handle the financial and policy-making requirements of conducting a private practice
  Learn how to cultivate and keep referral sources

He is a founding board member and past president of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and the Family & Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York. Ken is both a trained family therapist and a licensed school psychologist with 35 years of experience working with families and children going through the divorce process.
